Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has travelled to Togo where he is connecting to his African roots.
Although the highly-rated attacker plays for the Netherlands, his parents are of Togolese and Ghanaian descent.
On his arrival in Togo, the streets were alive with excitement as the Dutch star was greeted by a vibrant crowd.
His arrival follows a standout season with Liverpool, where he played a crucial role in helping the club win the English Premier League title.
Gakpo’s visit serves as a personal journey to honour his ancestry. He was welcomed with traditional dances, colourful attire, and the unmistakable rhythm of local drums as the community celebrated his arrival with immense pride.
Members of the Ewe ethnic group, prominent in Togo, performed cultural dances in his honour.
This is not Gakpo’s first time in Togo, having previously visited for humanitarian work, reflecting his continued commitment to the local community.
Footage from the visit showed Gakpo warmly engaging with locals, proudly holding the Togolese flag during the welcome ceremony.
He also embraced the local culture, sampling Togolese cuisine, with a video of him enjoying a popular delicacy quickly going viral.
