Liverpool sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on season-long loan

Liverpool have signed Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, with the Uruguay international waiting for a work permit before joining up with his new team-mates.

The deal does not include a purchase option, according to the terms announced by Liverpool. However, reports suggest the English club have negotiated the right to buy Araujo permanently for 55m euros at the end of the loan.

Araujo said he was eager to begin his time at Anfield and described the move as the right decision at this stage of his career.

“I can’t wait to start my career here. I’m very happy,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

“I’m excited to play for this great club with such a great history, and I’m looking forward to meeting my team-mates. I’m eager to get involved.”

The 27-year-old added: “I think this was the perfect move for this part of my career and it was a step I needed to take. As soon as I heard about Liverpool’s interest, everything moved very quickly.”

He said: “I’m happy to be here and excited to get started. It was the right move at the right time.”

Liverpool have been short of defensive options because of injuries, increasing the need to complete Araujo’s arrival before the start of the Premier League season.

The defender is expected to play a significant role for Arne Slot’s side during the new campaign, with Liverpool requiring additional cover and experience in defence.

Araujo leaves Barcelona amid reduced role

Araujo agreed to leave Barcelona amid expectations that his importance in the team would decline during the coming season. The prospect of a reduced role encouraged him to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said the player understood why a change was necessary.

“Araujo is a great player and a special character, and he understood that he needed a new challenge,” said Flick.

“I saw him happy before he travelled, and I wish him all the best in his next step.”

Araujo joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018 and has worn the club’s captain’s armband during the past two seasons.

He made 35 appearances for Barcelona last season and scored four goals. Despite that contribution, he had lost his regular starting place during the previous two campaigns as his performances came under scrutiny.

Liverpool’s decision to bring him in comes as they prepare for the demands of the new season, while Araujo will hope regular first-team football can help him re-establish himself at the highest level.

His move remains subject to the completion of the work-permit process, meaning he cannot yet join Liverpool’s squad until that clearance has been granted.
