Liverpool shut door on Cody Gakpo exit as Slot plans around Dutch-Togolese forward

Liverpool are set to resist any transfer interest in forward Cody Gakpo, reaffirming the Dutch international’s importance in new manager Arne Slot’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

The club has made clear its intention to retain Gakpo as a central figure in its attacking unit as it embarks on a new chapter under the former Feyenoord boss.

Gakpo, who has Togolese heritage through his father, has become an increasingly influential presence at Anfield since joining from PSV Eindhoven.

His versatility across the front line and his work rate have earned him the trust of both coaching staff and club executives.

As speculation continues to mount over potential moves for the 26-year-old, Liverpool’s position remains firm: he is not for sale.

Sources close to the club indicate that two major European sides have been closely monitoring Gakpo’s situation, but Liverpool have given no signals that they are open to discussions.

Instead, the focus within the club remains on bolstering the squad around players like Gakpo, rather than entertaining bids for those deemed central to their future.

Gakpo is under a long-term contract and has adapted well to the demands of English football. His ability to operate both centrally and from wide positions makes him a valuable asset in Slot’s tactical framework, which is expected to emphasise fluidity and attacking cohesion.

Alongside Gakpo, Colombian winger Luis Díaz is also viewed as indispensable. The pair are seen as pillars of Liverpool’s next generation, as the club seeks to transition smoothly from the Jurgen Klopp era while remaining competitive at the highest level.
