Premier League giants, Liverpool, remain optimistic that France international of Malian descent Ibrahima Konaté will commit his future to the club by signing a new contract.
The 26-year-old is entering the final months of his current deal at Anfield, which is due to expire at the end of the season, and negotiations have yet to produce an agreement.
Despite the uncertainty, Liverpool are still hopeful of reaching a positive resolution with the centre-back.
The Premier League champions have endured a challenging domestic campaign, with inconsistent performances affecting several senior players, including Konaté at times.
However, the defender has shown signs of a strong resurgence in recent weeks. He played a decisive role in Liverpool’s impressive victory over Sunderland, ending the Black Cats’ unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.
Within the club, there is confidence that Konaté could follow the path taken by teammates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom signed contract extensions after prolonged talks. Liverpool believe patience and continuity could yet persuade the former RB Leipzig defender to remain on Merseyside.
Nevertheless, extending his stay at Anfield is not Konaté’s only option. Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring his situation closely and could attempt to lure him to Spain on a free transfer should talks with Liverpool fail to progress.
