Liverpool manager Arne Slot has weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal, refuting claims that the uncertainty has distracted the Egyptian star or the team.
Salah’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate with foreign clubs starting in January.
Salah recently expressed disappointment over the lack of a new contract offer, stating he feels “more out than in.” Despite this, Slot believes Salah remains laser-focused on his performances, which continue to shine on the pitch.
“We don’t feel this as a distraction here, at least I don’t,” Slot stated ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
He added, “If I look at my lineups, Mo is more in than out. He’s just kept on scoring and hasn’t shown any sign of distraction.”
The Liverpool boss emphasised that Salah’s mindset remains anchored in the team’s immediate goals.
“Players are focused on the short term—on Madrid, on City. Mo is fully focused on the game tomorrow,” he affirmed, dismissing concerns about contract drama overshadowing team unity.
Salah’s form this season speaks volumes. With 12 goals across all competitions, including a vital double in last weekend’s 3-2 victory over Southampton, he has propelled Liverpool to an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
While former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelled Salah’s recent comments as “selfish,” Slot took a different approach.
“Carragher also said Mo is one of the best players Liverpool has ever had, and I completely agree. That’s no small compliment considering the greats who have played here,” Slot remarked, highlighting Salah’s immense value to the club.
Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, is leading contract talks with Salah’s representatives, and Slot hinted that negotiations remain positive. However, he declined to provide specific updates.
“By the time Mo’s contract is extended, it won’t have caused any disruption for him, the players, or definitely not me,” he assured.
As Liverpool gears up for high-stakes matches against Real Madrid and Manchester City, Salah’s continued focus and stellar performances could be crucial in maintaining their impressive momentum.
