Lamine Camara could join Liverpool next summer after Chelsea deal falls through

Liverpool have identified Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara as a priority for next summer after the player’s proposed move to Chelsea collapsed on the final day of the transfer window, according to English journalist Ben Jacobs.

Camara appeared set to leave Monaco for Chelsea after the London club eventually agreed to meet the French side’s initial £55m valuation. However, the transfer failed to go through after Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro did not complete the required paperwork in time.

The dramatic conclusion to the deal has now opened the door for Liverpool to pursue the former FC Metz midfielder next summer.

Monaco had initially placed a €55 million price tag on Camara and rejected three Chelsea bids. The first offer was worth €40m, followed by proposals of €45m and €50m.

Chelsea eventually returned with the €55m requested by Monaco on the final day of the window. The offer was still rejected, with the French club increasing their demands to €70m.

The situation then changed again, with Monaco eventually agreeing to Chelsea’s proposal.

However, the agreement came too late to complete the transfer. Scuro was reportedly focused on negotiations surrounding Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton, which also failed to materialise, and the necessary documents for Camara’s transfer were not signed before the deadline.

Chelsea were left frustrated by the way Monaco handled the situation, bringing an extraordinary end to their attempt to sign the Senegal international.

While the negotiations between Chelsea and Monaco were unfolding, Liverpool were also working behind the scenes.

According to Jacobs, Liverpool officials held several conversations with representatives of Camara as they sought to prevent the midfielder from moving to Chelsea.

The Reds reportedly made clear that their plans for the current summer window depended on Alexis Mac Allister leaving the club before they would sign another midfielder.

However, Liverpool also communicated their longer-term intentions to Camara’s representatives.

The English club indicated that the Senegal international was their leading midfield target for the following summer transfer window.

That approach could now prove significant after Camara’s Chelsea move collapsed.

The 22-year-old remains at Monaco, while Liverpool have reportedly positioned themselves to make another attempt to sign him when the transfer window reopens next summer.

Camara’s future had become one of the major stories of the closing stages of the transfer window, with Chelsea pushing hard to secure his signature before the deal unexpectedly fell apart.

Liverpool’s reported interest adds another layer to the saga, with the Reds now potentially in pole position for a player they consider a major target for next summer.

For Camara, the immediate outcome is a continuation of his time at Monaco. But if Liverpool follow through on the commitment reportedly made to his representatives, his future could be decided when the next summer transfer window opens.
