Liverpool eye summer move for SC Braga’s Malian defender Sikou Niakaté

Sikou 1

Liverpool have set their sights on SC Braga centre-back Sikou Niakaté, with the Premier League giants reportedly exploring ways to sign the Malian international during the upcoming transfer window.

The 24-year-old has caught the attention of top European clubs following a string of impressive performances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

Known for his strength, composure, and tactical awareness, Niakaté has emerged as one of Braga’s standout players this season and is now firmly on Liverpool’s radar as they seek to bolster their defensive ranks.

Club sources suggest Liverpool are considering bypassing the €30 million release clause stipulated in Niakaté’s contract by negotiating directly with Braga, hoping to reach an agreement that could benefit both parties.

The Reds are understood to be prioritising a left-footed centre-back this summer to provide additional depth and balance alongside Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk.

Niakaté’s growing reputation has not gone unnoticed beyond Merseyside. Manchester City, Manchester United, West Ham United, Feyenoord, Bologna, and Galatasaray have all reportedly been monitoring the defender’s progress.

Galatasaray, however, are believed to have withdrawn their interest after learning of the full extent of the buyout clause, which Braga are reluctant to lower.

Braga remain adamant that any club wishing to acquire Niakaté will need to meet the full terms of his release clause.

Despite mounting interest, the Portuguese side are not prepared to entertain negotiations below that valuation, believing the defender’s performances and potential merit such a price.

Niakaté’s profile has risen considerably in recent months, not only due to his domestic form but also through his contributions to Mali’s national team.

He played a central role during the recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign and has made clear his openness to a move to the English Premier League.

For Liverpool, the pursuit of Niakaté forms part of a wider strategy to reinforce their defensive structure ahead of next season.

With Joel Matip’s long-term future uncertain and concerns about squad depth in central defence, the club is looking to inject youth and athleticism into its back line.

Niakaté’s blend of physicality and football intelligence is seen as an ideal match for the high-intensity demands of English football.

While no formal offer has yet been tabled, discussions are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as Liverpool evaluate their summer transfer priorities.

Niakaté remains under contract with Braga, and any move will depend on how far the Merseyside club are willing to go to meet the financial demands.

Should Liverpool proceed with the transfer, it could mark one of the most notable moves involving a Malian international this summer, further elevating Niakaté’s standing on the continental stage. For now, the ball remains in Liverpool’s court, with Braga holding firm as negotiations loom.
