Liverpool confirm Jeff Bezos investment as 1892 group enters Anfield partnership

Liverpool have confirmed that Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos has taken an investment stake in the club, joining a new alliance that will acquire one-third of the Premier League side.

The American billionaire will invest under the 1892 Holdings alliance alongside British-Indian billionaire Amit Bhatia, the former chief executive of Queens Park Rangers.

Bhatia is expected to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman as part of the agreement, according to reports.

The new investment group will also include Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire co-founder of Facebook. Together, the alliance will purchase a third of the shares in Liverpool.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, will remain the club’s majority owner and retain control of its day-to-day operations.

Liverpool said the investment was designed to support the club’s long-term ambitions both on and off the pitch.

“This strategic investment aims to support the Reds’ long-term growth ambitions by bringing together the expertise of leading figures in global finance, business, technology and investment,” the club said in an official statement.

It added: “The alliance partners will work alongside FSG and the club’s executive management to assess opportunities that support Liverpool’s objectives on and off the pitch, while FSG retains majority ownership and operational control of the club.”

Bezos, who founded Amazon, is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. His investment brings one of the most prominent figures in global technology and business into Liverpool’s ownership structure.

The 1892 Holdings alliance is led by Bhatia, who previously served as chief executive of Queens Park Rangers. The group’s partnership with Liverpool will combine his football experience with the financial and technology backgrounds of Bezos and Saverin.

FSG chairman Mike Gordon said Liverpool’s long-term approach had helped attract interest from major investors and business leaders around the world.

“Liverpool has always been built on thinking beyond a single season. This approach continues to attract the interest of leading investors and business leaders from across the world. It became clear to us that Amit and the alliance share the same philosophy, and we look forward to working together,” Gordon said.

Bhatia said the alliance was proud to invest in Liverpool alongside FSG and paid tribute to what the club had achieved at Anfield.

“We are extremely proud to invest in Liverpool alongside Fenway. We have the utmost respect and appreciation for what they have achieved at Anfield, and being partners in a club of this stature is a great honour for us,” he said on behalf of 1892 Holdings.

The agreement places Bezos and the wider alliance among Liverpool’s strategic investors, while FSG will continue to oversee the club’s ownership and management.
