Liverpool beat Tottenham 3-1 to reach League Cup last 16

Liverpool reached the last 16 of the League Cup after beating Tottenham 3-1 in the standout tie of the competition’s third round.

Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored for Liverpool, while Conor Gallagher replied for Tottenham. The result also ended Tottenham’s run without a goal this season, having gone four matches without scoring in the Premier League.

Omar Marmoush started for Tottenham but is still waiting for his first goal for the club.

Team selection

Marmoush was named in Tottenham’s attack, with Martin Dubravka selected in goal.

Liverpool made extensive use of substitutes and young players, with Mac Allister starting in midfield and Ronald Araujo lining up in defence.

Liverpool establish control

Tottenham created the first significant opportunity in the 11th minute when Lucas Bergvall’s effort appeared destined to open the scoring. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili reacted well to keep out the shot.

Liverpool took the lead nine minutes later. Mac Allister advanced to the edge of the penalty area before striking a powerful shot beyond Dubravka.

Marmoush was booked in the 41st minute after bringing down a Liverpool player, as Tottenham struggled to turn possession into clear chances.

Liverpool went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage.

The visitors increased their lead nine minutes after the restart. Gakpo produced an excellent finish in the 54th minute to make it 2-0 and put Liverpool in a commanding position.

Tottenham responded in the 69th minute, when Gallagher headed home to reduce the deficit. It was Tottenham’s first goal of the season after four consecutive scoreless matches in the Premier League.

The goal gave Tottenham renewed hope of forcing a comeback, and Marmoush came close to completing it four minutes from full-time.

The forward made his way into the penalty area and released a shot from inside the 18-yard box, but Mamardashvili made an impressive save and turned the effort behind for a corner.

Liverpool secured the victory in the closing stages. Szoboszlai met the ball on the volley from outside the 18-yard box and struck a fierce effort into the net, sealing a 3-1 win and Liverpool’s place in the League Cup last 16.
