Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham: Mac Allister, Gakpo and Szoboszlai send Reds into Carabao Cup last 16

Liverpool reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield in the third round of the competition.

Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for the hosts in the 21st minute with an excellent strike, giving Liverpool the advantage before half-time.

Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s lead nine minutes after the interval, putting the home side in a commanding position.

Tottenham responded in the 69th minute when Conor Gallagher reduced the deficit. The goal, described as Tottenham’s first of the season, gave the visitors renewed hope and made for a tense finish at Anfield.

Liverpool, however, held on to their lead before Dominik Szoboszlai settled the tie in stoppage time. The midfielder scored in the 90+1st minute with a long-range effort to end Tottenham’s hopes of completing a comeback.

Egypt forward Omar Marmoush played in Tottenham’s attack until the final whistle but was unable to find the net against Liverpool.

Tottenham had reached the third round after a 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the previous round.

The nine Premier League clubs competing in European competitions – Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland – all entered the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage.
