Colombia have won four of their five World Cup matches against African teams, while Ghana have lost all three of their previous World Cup encounters against South American opposition, adding extra pressure on the Black Stars as they chase history.

This is the first-ever meeting between Colombia and Ghana at senior level.

First-ever meeting between both nations

The Black Stars will need to be more clinical in attack after scoring no more than one goal in ten consecutive internationals, placing added pressure on their defensive unit to stay compact against Colombia’s structured attack.

However, Ghana have struggled for possession, averaging just 36% across the group stage — one of the lowest figures among teams still in the competition.

That loss ended a run of five consecutive clean sheets in competitive matches for the Black Stars, highlighting their recent defensive improvement.

Ghana reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams despite a 2-1 defeat to Croatia on matchday three.

Ghana’s resilience offers hope

Despite that, Colombia will feel confident, having won their last four World Cup matches against African opposition, including a victory over DR Congo earlier in the tournament.

However, their attacking output has tended to come late, with all four of their group-stage goals arriving after the 40th minute.

Los Cafeteros have conceded just one goal in the group stage and kept four clean sheets in their last six World Cup matches, underlining their defensive discipline.

Colombia come into the knockout stage unbeaten in eight competitive matches, having drawn 0-0 with Portugal to secure top spot in Group K.

Colombia’s defensive strength sets the tone

The Black Stars are aiming to reach the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time since 2010, while Colombia arrive as one of the most defensively solid teams in the tournament.
