Lionel Messi set for Argentina farewell in special Adidas shirt

Lionel Messi is expected to make his final appearance for Argentina against Benin on 6 October, with Adidas unveiling a specially designed shirt to mark what could be the end of the 39-year-old’s international career.

The shirt has been created as a tribute to Messi during the closing chapter of his time with the national team. Its design draws on symbols closely connected with his history in an Argentina shirt.

A gold number 10 features on the back, with the figure positioned over the sun at the centre of the Argentine flag. The sun is also incorporated into the fabric, combining the identity of the national team with the historical status of its captain.

The tribute reflects Messi’s exceptional record for Argentina. He has won 207 caps and scored 125 goals, while leading his country to the 2022 World Cup. He has also won the Ballon d’Or seven times.

Argentina will play two other friendlies before the meeting with Benin, facing Bolivia on 30 September and Burkina Faso on 3 October. Messi will not be involved in either match.

Attention will then turn to 6 October and what is expected to be Messi’s final appearance in an Argentina shirt. The match could mark the conclusion of a historic international era for one of the greatest players in football history.
