Linton Maina thriving as Rene Wagner praises Koln winger

Linton Maina has emerged as one of FC Koln’s most influential attacking players at the start of the season, with one goal and two assists making him the club’s leading scorer so far.

Head coach Rene Wagner believes the 27-year-old is thriving because he feels trusted and comfortable within the squad. “Linton is a player who needs to feel comfortable and, to some extent, feel that trust. He is getting that from us at the moment,” Wagner said at Wednesday’s press conference.

Consistency has been key. After periods of inconsistency in the past, Maina is now delivering regularly, arriving at training motivated and working hard on his game. Wagner sees this as an important new phase for a long-serving player.

The coach also praised Maina’s defensive commitment, saying he throws himself into every duel with great attention to detail. Those actions, Wagner believes, create chances for Maina to use his pace and attacking quality after winning the ball back.

Wagner added that the pair have a good relationship, which may also be helping the winger’s form. Maina is expected to start when Köln face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Friday.
