Rio Mavuba, the defensive midfielder and captain of Lille, didn’t hold back in expressing his frustration after the team’s heavy defeat against Bayern Munich (6-1) in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday. Mavuba, who entered the game at halftime after a month-long absence, described the match as a nightmare and reflected on the team’s elimination from the Champions League.

In an interview with beIN Sport, the French international said, “It’s very hard. We got through it. On almost every attack, there was a goal. It’s difficult to exist in the Champions League when you concede so many goals. We are eliminated, it sucks… We fought all last season, there was also the play-off… This performance is not worthy of LOSC (Lille). Unfortunately, that’s how it is. We reacted in the second half, but it was not enough. The first period was catastrophic. Now we have the championship and the national cups left. We will have to quickly manage against Brest (12th day of Ligue 1).”

Mavuba, of Congolese descent, came on as a substitute for Dimitri Payet in the second half, attempting to bring some stability to the struggling midfield. The player acknowledged that the final score was truly not flattering for Lille.
