Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s dramatic brace seals stunning Marseille comeback against Lyon

A late double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed a dramatic turnaround as Marseille beat Lyon 3-2 at the Vélodrome in a pulsating conclusion to Ligue 1’s 24th round.

The hosts recovered from an early setback to claim all three points in the latest “Olympico”, overturning Lyon’s lead with two goals in the final 10 minutes to strengthen their grip on fourth place.

Lyon made the perfect start. After just three minutes, Endrick slipped the ball into the path of Corentin Tolisso, who finished past goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Marseille attempted an immediate response, with Mason Greenwood testing Greif twice in quick succession, but the Lyon goalkeeper stood firm.

Roman Yaremchuk nearly doubled Lyon’s lead deep into first-half stoppage time, only for Rulli to deny him.

At the interval, the visitors remained ahead.

The contest shifted dramatically after the break. Marseille introduced Paixao before half-time, and the change proved decisive.

After Aguerd fired narrowly wide early in the second half, the Brazilian substitute brought the home side level in the 54th minute with a curling effort into the top corner.

Lyon continued to threaten. Himbert, who replaced Yaremchuk, squandered a clear opportunity when he shot wide from close range, while Endrick failed to convert a long pass from Tolisso, allowing Rulli to gather.

The visitors regained the lead in the 78th minute when Endrick provided his second assist of the match, setting up Himbert to score from a tight angle. Yet their advantage lasted barely two minutes.

From a corner, Paixao headed the ball back across goal and Aubameyang reacted quickest to make it 2-2.

There was still time for more drama.

Tagliafico’s late header brushed the post, but it was Marseille who delivered the decisive blow.

In stoppage time, Aubameyang met a cross from Nwaneri and converted to seal his brace and secure a 3-2 victory.

The result leaves Marseille fourth in the table, now just two points behind third-placed Lyon.
