Ligue 2: Lens Miss Chance to Clinch Promotion After Home Defeat to Brest
RC Lens failed to secure promotion to Ligue 1 after a disappointing 0-1 home loss to Brest on Friday in the penultimate round of Ligue 2. Jonathan Ayité’s goal for the visitors dashed Lens’ hopes of sealing their return to the top flight in front of their fans.
The defeat leaves Lens third in the table, level on points with Caen and only two points ahead of Nancy, who won convincingly against Angers (3-1). With one match remaining, the race for the top three spots — which guarantee promotion — remains wide open.
Lens coach Antoine Kombouaré acknowledged the missed opportunity but vowed that his team will be ready for the decisive final fixture: a trip to CA Bastia. “We would have preferred to secure promotion tonight and celebrate it with our fans, but that’s not how it turned out,” Kombouaré said. “We accept the situation. Now it’s all about coming together and doing the job next week.”
Lens’ final match will be against a CA Bastia side that is already relegated, but with the pressure mounting and promotion on the line, nothing is guaranteed.
