Issa Cissokho Shines in Breakout Ligue 1 Season with FC Nantes
As the Ligue 1 season draws to a close, few players have made as strong an impression in their debut top-flight campaign as FC Nantes’ right-back Issa Cissokho. The Senegalese international, who only recently made the leap from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1, has become a key figure in the Canaries’ squad, earning praise for his relentless energy, acceleration, and consistency on the flank.
Cissokho, the older brother of fellow professional Aly Cissokho, has been a revelation at Stade de la Beaujoire. Week after week, his dynamic runs and defensive tenacity have helped Nantes secure a comfortable place in the league table, with safety confirmed ahead of the final matchday. Reflecting on his first season in France’s top division, the 29-year-old defender shared a mix of satisfaction and determination.
“It’s a very positive assessment,” Cissokho said. “We had a great start to the season, before experiencing some difficulties. But today, we’re very happy with what we’ve accomplished. I’m very satisfied with my season and hope we finish well to climb a few more places in the standings. That’s the most important thing.”
The transition from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 is no small feat, but Cissokho has taken it in stride. He attributes his success to hard work and resilience, noting the physical and mental demands that have shaped his journey.
“Ligue 1 is very different from Ligue 2. But I adapted well. I’m proud of my performances and thankful to the club for the confidence they’ve shown by playing me regularly. It’s up to me to keep working hard and maintain this level, both for my club and with the Senegal national team,” he explained.
Cissokho also touched on the challenges he’s overcome to reach this stage of his career.
“I’ve had my share of difficulties, but I stayed focused. Self-sacrifice has been key. I gave everything throughout the season. I went from being a national-level player to an international, from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1. People start seeing you differently. Personally, I stay focused on the pitch and my footballing future.”
His performances have not gone unnoticed outside Nantes. Reports emerged in March linking Cissokho with a potential move to Olympique de Marseille. According to French newspaper La Provence, a verbal agreement may have already been reached between the player and OM president Vincent Labrune. However, Cissokho remains cautious and committed to finishing the season strong.
“For now, these are just rumours. In football, things can move quickly. I’m focused on playing football. If there’s anything to discuss, that’ll be between my agent and me. Until the final match is played, I’m not thinking about the future.”
As speculation swirls, one thing is clear: Issa Cissokho has earned his place in Ligue 1, and with it, the attention of some of the league’s biggest clubs. Whether he stays in Nantes or moves on to new challenges, his breakout season has firmly established him as one of the league’s standout defenders.
