Sitting 16th in Ligue 1 after 12 matchdays, Dijon FCO and their goalkeeper Alfred Gomis have become something of a puzzle in the league. The team has proven resilient against the top sides, remaining unbeaten this season against Marseille, Lyon, and PSG. Yet, against teams lower in the table, they often struggle to reproduce the same level of performance. Ahead of their 13th-round clash with AS Monaco, Gomis opened up about the team’s mindset.
“Against the big teams in the league, we are already motivated. The coach doesn’t need to make things easier for us,” the Senegalese international revealed, shedding light on the mental edge that helps Dijon punch above their weight.
Since arriving in Dijon, Gomis has been warmly welcomed by his teammates, who have not hesitated to praise his contributions. True to his humble nature, the goalkeeper quickly returned the compliment while emphasizing the collective effort required in football.
“I’m glad to know that my teammates appreciate me, but I’m not solely responsible for the team’s good results. The first line of defense is the forwards, then there are the midfielders, the defenders, and finally the goalkeeper,” Gomis explained in an interview with France Football.
With this perspective, it’s clear that Dijon’s surprising results against Ligue 1 giants stem from a combination of determination, teamwork, and strong defensive organization. This Saturday, they will aim to carry that confidence to the Stade Louis II, where they face another formidable opponent in AS Monaco.
Alfred Gomis and Dijon’s challenge lies in maintaining this intensity against all sides, not just the big names, if they hope to climb the Ligue 1 standings.
