Lorient, securing their first league victory since August 31, is experiencing a much-needed revival. After facing significant challenges with four consecutive defeats and six winless matches, Lorient demonstrated strength against a direct rival in the battle for survival, Sochaux. Positioned 18th in the standings with 7 points, Les Merlus were in desperate need of success to climb the rankings.
Vincent Aboubakar, initially uncertain, ultimately retained his place in the Lorient attack. The former Valenciennes player recognized the urgency for the Breton club to accumulate points. Aboubakar played a pivotal role in Lorient’s 2-0 victory over FC Sochaux on the 11th day of Ligue 1.
In the 17th minute, Aboubakar opened the scoring, capitalizing on a brilliant movement initiated by Jouffre and executed by Bryan Pelé. Aboubakar, positioned alone at the penalty spot, skillfully volleyed Pelé’s instant cross into the net. The Indomitable Lion showcased an impressive performance against Sochaux, not only breaking the deadlock but also contributing to the second goal.
After creating an opportunity on the left side of the area, Aboubakar calmly assisted Jouffre at the penalty spot. The former Guingamp player confidently placed a left-footed shot, extending Lorient’s lead to 2-0. Although Cedric Bakambu managed to score a late goal for Sochaux in added time, Lorient secured a crucial 2-1 victory, putting an end to a two-month winless streak.
With this triumph, Christian Gourcuff and his team can now breathe a sigh of relief, gaining a much-needed boost in their campaign.
