Libya fight back from two goals down to draw with Botswana in AFCON 2027 qualifier

Libya recovered from a two-goal half-time deficit to draw 2-2 with Botswana in a thrilling opening match of their Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign on Thursday, 24 September 2026.

Botswana appeared to be in complete control after a dominant first half at the Tripoli Stadium. Tumisang Orebonye struck twice, scoring in the 30th and 42nd minutes to give the visitors a commanding advantage at the break.

The Zebras looked on course for victory, but Libya responded strongly after half-time and gradually put Botswana under sustained pressure.

The Mediterranean Knights’ late revival finally paid off when Maruwan Alhibeeshi pulled a goal back in the 87th minute. Libya then completed their comeback deep into added time, with Ezoo El Mariamy converting a penalty in the 96th minute to secure a share of the points.

The dramatic second half kept supporters engaged until the final whistle, as Libya overturned a two-goal deficit against a Botswana side that had produced an impressive first-half display.
