Lewis-Skelly exit doubts persist as Manchester United seek new left-back

Manchester United remain hopeful of signing Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly before the summer transfer window closes next week, despite growing public confidence that the defender will stay at his boyhood club.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said last week that he was “100%” certain Lewis-Skelly would remain with the Gunners, appearing to settle questions over the 19-year-old’s future.

Lewis-Skelly has also made clear that he is happy at Arsenal. The England international signed a new long-term contract with the club only 12 months ago and has started the new campaign positively.

He produced eye-catching performances in Arsenal’s victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield and their opening Premier League win against Coventry City. He has also responded well to increased competition for places following Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival.

However, The Sun reports that Manchester United believe the situation may not be as settled as it appears. Sources described as well-informed reportedly feel Lewis-Skelly’s greater involvement over the past two weeks has been influenced by Martin Zubimendi’s dip in form and the time Mikel Merino has needed to regain his usual level after the World Cup.

Arsenal are also understood to believe that none of the clubs interested in Lewis-Skelly is currently prepared to meet an asking price likely to exceed £50m. That expectation has strengthened the club’s belief that it can retain one of its most highly regarded young players.

Manchester United’s interest comes as they urgently seek a new left-back. Their defensive weaknesses were exposed again in Saturday’s unexpected 2-0 defeat by Hull City, increasing the pressure to strengthen in that position before the deadline.

Reports earlier this month claimed that intermediaries had offered Lewis-Skelly to both Manchester United and Chelsea. Arsenal, who were said to need to raise funds through a significant sale, were reportedly among the clubs considering their options over the player.

Despite those claims, there has been no indication that Lewis-Skelly is pushing to leave Arsenal. His recent displays and new contract have reinforced his position within Arteta’s squad, while the club’s valuation remains a major obstacle for potential suitors.

Manchester United therefore face a difficult race against time if they are to make a move. The club remains convinced that there is uncertainty surrounding Lewis-Skelly’s future, but Arsenal’s faith in retaining him, combined with the expected transfer fee, means a deal is far from straightforward.
