Victor Boniface is edging closer to reclaiming his starting role at Bayer Leverkusen, with manager Xabi Alonso expressing confidence in the Nigerian striker’s return to form.
Since recovering from injury, Boniface has struggled to re-establish himself as Leverkusen’s first-choice forward. With Patrik Schick and Nathan Tella currently ahead of him in the pecking order, the 23-year-old has found himself battling for game time. Despite his challenges, Alonso believes the forward is making significant progress.
So far this season, Boniface has recorded 11 goals and one assist across all competitions, a tally that reflects both his potential and the setbacks he has endured.
His previous status as Alonso’s preferred striker has been challenged, but the Leverkusen manager is optimistic about his resurgence.
Speaking ahead of the team’s German Cup clash against Arminia Bielefeld, Alonso acknowledged Boniface’s recent improvements, particularly in Leverkusen’s match against Bochum.
“I liked both against Bochum, especially in the second half. He played well,” Alonso stated. “Boni has returned to a good level and can certainly start. With him, we have flexibility.
He can play as a center forward or a winger.”
Boniface’s adaptability could be key in Leverkusen’s tactical approach, offering Alonso more attacking options as the club pushes for success in domestic and European competitions.
If the Nigerian striker continues to impress, he may soon reclaim his place as Leverkusen’s attacking spearhead.
