Lesotho coach Bob Mafoso confident of Niger upset in 2027 AFCON qualifier

Lesotho coach Bob Mafoso says his side will not be intimidated by their low continental ranking when they begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign against Niger in Accra today.

The match is being staged in Ghana because Lesotho do not have a FIFA-approved venue available. Lesotho will also have to overcome a significant difference in the teams’ rankings, with the Niger National Team entering the game above them.

Mafoso took charge of a Likuena side left ranked 147th in the world and 44th in Africa by predecessor Leslie Notsi. Despite that statistical disadvantage and the unfamiliar surroundings, the coach believes his players are ready to compete and demonstrate their ability.

“We know quite a bit about the Niger National Team because everything is not hidden in today’s world. We are aware that they are ranked above us, but that just makes it an interesting game,” Mafoso said.

Lesotho are in a qualifying group that also includes Morocco and Gabon, leaving Mafoso with a demanding task as they seek to reach the tournament.

Captain Sekhoane Moerane reinforced his coach’s confidence, saying Lesotho had prepared thoroughly and were targeting the best possible start.

“We are very well prepared and we came here to collect maximum points. We respect them but we don’t fear them so we will be fighting for that victory because every nation wants to qualify,” Moerane said.

Moerane acknowledged that the challenge will become even greater when Lesotho face Morocco and Gabon, describing those opponents as stronger. However, he said that would not reduce the team’s determination to pursue victory against Niger and begin their qualification campaign positively.
