Leroy Sane’s uncertain future: Bayern’s biggest dilemma

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane’s place at Bayern Munich is under intense scrutiny, with contract negotiations hanging in the balance.

The winger, once a dynamic force, has struggled to regain his top form since returning from injury, leaving his long-term future uncertain.

Bayern signed Sane from Manchester City on 3 July 2020, securing him on a five-year deal worth an initial €45 million, with add-ons potentially increasing the fee to €60 million. He made an explosive return to the Bundesliga, scoring on his second debut in Bayern’s emphatic 8–0 win over former club Schalke 04. However, maintaining that level has been a challenge.

Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg reports that Sane’s future has become Bayern’s most pressing internal debate. Club legends Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge are reportedly reluctant to extend his contract, which expires in 2025, while the stances of Max Eberl and Christoph Freund remain unclear.

The next few months could determine Sane’s fate, but if a decision had to be made today, Bayern would likely part ways with the winger, according to Plettenberg.
