Leonardo Zikora: German-Nigerian defender joins VfR Mannheim on free transfer

German-Nigerian centre-back Leonardo Zikora has joined VfR Mannheim on a free transfer from Sandhausen U19. The 19-year-old defender moves into the Regionalliga Sudwest after signing for the Mannheim club ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Zikora, who stands at 1.89m and is right-footed, has been recruited to strengthen VfR Mannheims options in the heart of defence. Born in Mannheim on 19 January 2007, he returns to his home city following a series of youth spells across south-west Germany.

The move comes after two seasons in the U19 structure, most recently with Sandhausen. Zikora had joined Sandhausen U19 in 2024, also on a free transfer, following a year in the youth ranks at Karlsruhe. Before that, he developed at Waldhof Mannheims U17 side and earlier youth teams in the region.

Zikora has already had a brief taste of senior regional football, making one appearance in the Regionalliga Sudwest and featuring for 45 minutes. At youth level, he built up regular game time, including more than 20 matches in the U17-Bundesliga South/Southwest and further outings across several U19 Nachwuchsliga groups, contributing a small number of goals and assists from central defence.

Capable of operating as a specialist centre-back, Zikora will now look to establish himself at VfR Mannheim after completing his switch from Sandhausen U19 on a free transfer.
