Leny Yoro wins all nine duels as surprise France call-up impresses Zinedine Zidane

Leny Yoro seized an unexpected opportunity with France by winning all nine of his duels in a commanding debut against Belgium, convincing Zinedine Zidane that he is ready for international football.

The Manchester United defender was initially called up to the senior squad as one of the surprises in Zidane’s latest selection. His chance to start arrived sooner than expected after Ibrahima Konate suffered an injury, prompting the France manager to place his trust in Yoro alongside Maxence Lacroix at Stade de France.

The occasion represented a major test for the 19-year-old, with France facing a Belgium side led by Romelu Lukaku in a match carrying significant importance in the race to finish top of the group.

Yoro showed no sign of being overwhelmed. He remained composed throughout the match and won every duel he contested, including five in the air. His performance demonstrated that he could cope with the physical demands and pace of top-level international football.

His contribution also extended beyond defending. Yoro completed 93% of his passes, while recording an 89% success rate in the final third. Those figures highlighted his ability to help build attacks and carry the ball forward without taking unnecessary risks.

France were forced to chase the game for long periods, but Yoro maintained his concentration until the final whistle. The hosts then turned the contest around in the closing stages to secure a convincing 4-1 victory.

“I don’t think I could have dreamed of anything better,” Yoro said after the match. “A game at home, with my family, and against Belgium. It was a great match. I was given the chance to play after Ibrahima’s injury, and I had to remain ready. I think we had a very good training camp, and there are many positives.”

Zidane said Konate’s injury had led the coaching staff to act quickly, while praising Yoro for making the most of his opportunity.

“There are many players in this position and, when we lost Ibrahima Konate, we wanted to bring Leny in immediately,” he said. “I am happy for him because he played a great match and carried out his role perfectly.”

Rather than simply rewarding a promising young player, Yoro’s first appearance for the senior side established him as a genuine option for Zidane. His performance also came while Cote d’Ivoire were still hoping to persuade him to represent the Elephants.

That made his night at Stade de France an early statement from a new French talent who may have a significant future with Les Bleus.
