Leicester City star Stephy Mavididi eager to switch allegiance to DR Congo ahead of final World Cup playoff
Leicester City winger Stephy Mavididi has reiterated desire to switch allegiance to DR Congo ahead of the final round of the 2026 World Cup playoff next year.
Despite featuring for England at the youth level, the 27-year-old attacker has opted to represent the Leopards at the international level, with the World Cup playoff fast approaching.
Mavididi previously turned down approaches from the Congolese football governing body, having priorities England at the club. Having struggled to earn call up to the senior team, the winger has decided to represent Congo.
The 27-year-old is reportedly eyeing his first call-up ahead of the intercontinental World Cup playoff, scheduled for March 2026. Mavididi has 18 caps for the Three Lions in youth categories, ranging from U17 to U20.
Having secured their place in the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico in March 2026, the DRC is on track for a historic qualification for the World Cup under its new banner.
The upcoming playoff is seen as a perfect opportunity for many dual nationals who have been lacking visibility to return to the forefront through their second nationality.
DR Congo triumphed over Nigeria in the African World Cup playoff final in Morocco last Sunday.
Mavididi has made eleven appearances for Leicester City in the English Championship, but he is yet to score or register assist.
