Lehlohonolo Seema backs Orlando Pirates for title despite draw with Siwelele
Head coach Lehlohonolo Seema believes Orlando Pirates remain strong contenders for the Betway Premiership title despite being held to a draw by Siwelele FC on Saturday.
The two sides shared the points after Tshepang Moremi cancelled out an earlier goal from Vincent Pule in a result that had implications for Pirates’ position in the title race.
Pirates currently lead the league standings with 48 points, holding a narrow advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns, although they have played one match more than their closest challengers.
Despite the importance of the result for the title battle, Seema praised his team for successfully executing their tactical approach against the league leaders. The coach highlighted how his side worked to limit the influence of Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, whom he described as a crucial figure in their opponent’s style of play.
“I don’t think we’re a team that came to Orlando just to defend, but there was an added level of challenge to deal with because he’s a silent killer, and that’s where we were able to frustrate the Orlando Pirates with Sipho Chaine,” he said.
The Siwelele coach explained that controlling Chaine’s ability to restart attacks formed a key part of their strategy during the match.
“Sipho Chaine is the silent killer. There are areas where we didn’t want him to restart play, because if he does, I can tell you that the team gets going and it ends either with a clearance, a corner or a shot on goal.
“So we managed that very well and every time he played where we wanted him to, we immediately pressed him. I think the game plan worked and I have to congratulate the players: we worked very hard and the plan was good.”
Although his team managed to take a point from the encounter, Seema still believes Pirates have the qualities required to finish the season as champions.
“But I think Orlando Pirates are the team that can still go for that title. I don’t think today’s draw is bad for them or makes them a bad team – today we suffered,” Seema added.
“I’ve faced this team twice and we’ve lost both times, so today at least I can smile; I’m leaving Orlando with a point. We’re happy with this point, and it will be important after our match in Bloemfontein, because I’m convinced we’ll win the next game, and then we’ll see how valuable this point will be.”
Pirates will continue their title pursuit when they travel to face TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium next Sunday, with the race for the championship still finely balanced.
