Claude Le Roy endures defeat on return as Congo head coach

Claude Le Roy’s return as Congo head coach began with defeat as his side lost 1-0 to Namibia away from home in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The 78-year-old Frenchman has returned for a second spell in charge of Congo, but his latest chapter began without a point as Namibia secured victory on Thursday.

Le Roy will now look to respond when Congo host Comoros on Tuesday, September 29.

Le Roy begins second Congo spell

Le Roy previously managed Congo between 2013 and 2015 and is now back for a second spell with the national team.

His appointment marks his 12th job as a national team coach, adding another chapter to a career that has made him one of the most experienced managers in African football.

The Frenchman has coached at more AFCON finals than any other manager, with nine tournament appearances and 38 matches at the continental finals.

Congo face Comoros next

The defeat in Namibia leaves Le Roy’s side needing a positive response in their next qualifying match.

Congo will have home advantage when they face Comoros on Tuesday as Le Roy searches for his first victory since returning to the national team.
