Having been crowned African champions last Friday after the second leg of the CAF Champions League final, Espérance de Tunis is determined to retain its title, despite the controversy surrounding the conclusion of the match.
The Moroccan Football Federation has announced plans to support Wydad Casablanca (WAC) by requesting that the final be replayed on neutral ground during an emergency CAF meeting scheduled for this Tuesday. However, the Tunisian club’s leadership has made it clear that they will not remain passive in the face of these developments.
In an official response on Monday, Espérance de Tunis formally requested to be present at the CAF meeting, arguing that their participation is warranted given that WAC representatives will also be in attendance. The club seeks to ensure that its interests are defended and that the circumstances under which they won the title are fully considered.
The situation underscores the high stakes of the 2019 CAF Champions League final, with tensions running high between the two North African giants. While Wydad and the Moroccan Federation push for a replay, Espérance is moving to assert its position and safeguard the legitimacy of its victory.
CAF’s forthcoming deliberation is expected to address both the controversial incidents of the match and the requests of both clubs, potentially setting a precedent for how disputes in African club competitions are handled in the future.
