UEFA has declared a clause existing between Chelsea and Atlético Madrid regarding goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as non-compliant.
Thibaut Courtois, loaned by Chelsea to Atlético Madrid, has become entangled in a legal dispute. A clause stipulates that the Spanish club must pay Chelsea €3 million to field the goalkeeper against them. However, UEFA has issued a press release stating that such a clause goes against the spirit of fair play and is unacceptable.
Chelsea could face sanctions if they insist on enforcing the clause, which would require Atlético Madrid to pay for the Belgian international’s participation. Atlético is keen to extend Courtois’ loan but may encounter difficulties persuading Chelsea if tensions escalate between the two clubs over this matter.
