Lazio step up interest in free-agent defender Axel Tuanzebe

Lazio are considering a move for Axel Tuanzebe as they look for affordable ways to strengthen a vulnerable defence, according to Laziochannel.

The 28-year-old defender is available without a transfer fee following his spell at Burnley and has emerged as an appealing option for Lazio manager Gennaro Gattuso. The Italian club are seeking defensive reinforcements, with Tuanzebe’s availability making him a potentially cost-effective addition.

Tuanzebe was developed at Manchester United and has already experienced Serie A during his time with Napoli. That previous knowledge of Italian football is viewed as another advantage as Lazio assess their options.

The defender can operate in more than one position, playing either in central defence or at right-back. His physical strength, speed and aggressive approach are considered well suited to the demands of Gattuso, whose preferred style places significant emphasis on intensity and defensive commitment.

Lazio’s financial limitations are also influencing their recruitment strategy. Sporting director Fabiani is prioritising opportunities that can be completed at relatively low cost, and signing a player who is currently without a club would avoid a transfer payment.

Despite being available for no fee, Tuanzebe has an estimated market value of €5m. His experience with several prominent English clubs is regarded as a significant asset, having represented Manchester United, Aston Villa, Stoke City and Burnley during his career.

Tuanzebe is also an international for DR Congo, with 17 senior caps. That experience, combined with his time in both the Premier League and Serie A, adds to his appeal as Lazio consider how to improve their defensive options.

The possible move would give the club a player capable of covering two defensive roles while fitting the financial approach being pursued by Fabiani. For Gattuso, Tuanzebe’s versatility and physical qualities could provide an alternative in a defence that Lazio believe needs strengthening.

No transfer fee would be required if the defender joined after leaving Burnley, although his estimated market value remains €5m. Lazio’s interest, as reported by Laziochannel, reflects the club’s search for an experienced and adaptable defender who can be recruited within a restricted budget.
