Premier League Giants Tottenham and Liverpool Eye Lazio’s Onazi
By BBC Sport
Rising Nigerian star Ogenyi Onazi is drawing growing interest from Premier League heavyweights, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool reportedly monitoring the Lazio midfielder closely.
Onazi, 21, has been one of the standout young talents in Serie A this season, and his performances have not gone unnoticed beyond Italy. According to Italian daily Il Messaggero, both Spurs and Liverpool have made inquiries about the Super Eagles international, with their scouts expected to keep a close eye on him during Lazio’s upcoming fixture against Hellas Verona on Monday — part of Matchday 36 in the Italian top flight.
The energetic midfielder, known for his tireless work rate and ability to break up play, is under contract with Lazio until June 2016. However, growing Premier League interest could test the resolve of the Roman club, who may soon face offers for one of their most promising assets.
Onazi has been a regular feature in Lazio’s midfield this season and is also a key figure in Nigeria’s national team, contributing to their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and subsequent World Cup qualification. His combination of defensive discipline and box-to-box mobility has made him a player of significant interest to clubs seeking to add steel and dynamism to their midfield ranks.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Lazio may have a decision to make regarding the future of one of their brightest young stars. Onazi’s potential move could mark another important step in his career, as well as a notable acquisition for whichever Premier League club secures his signature.
