Angola claimed the 2025 COSAFA Cup title in emphatic fashion on Sunday, cruising past South Africa with a convincing 3-0 victory in the final — a performance powered by the brilliance of Laurindo Maria Aurelio, known as Depu.
The Gil Vicente forward delivered a masterclass in front of goal, scoring twice in the final to cement his status as the standout player of the tournament.
Depu’s decisive performance not only secured the trophy for the Palancas Negras but also earned him two individual accolades: top scorer and best player of the competition.
With eight goals in five matches, Depu dominated the scoring charts, boasting an impressive strike rate of 1.6 goals per game.
His impact extended well beyond the scoreline, orchestrating Angola’s attacking play and serving as the focal point of a side that looked a cut above the rest of the field throughout the tournament.
“I’m proud of what we achieved as a team,” said Depu. “It’s an honour to contribute to this victory and to be recognised individually.”
Angola’s commanding tournament display was also underpinned by a solid defensive unit, with goalkeeper Adilson Da Cruz Cipriano, known as Neblu, taking home the Best Goalkeeper award.
The shot-stopper conceded only one goal in his five appearances, playing a crucial role in his team’s run to the title.
A second goal conceded by Angola during the tournament came under the watch of substitute keeper Signori Antonio.
Neblu’s consistency between the posts reflected the overall discipline and organisation of the Angolan squad, which was rarely troubled across their matches.
Their dominance culminated in the final, where South Africa struggled to convert their early opportunities before being overwhelmed by a clinical Angolan side.
Despite the heavy defeat, South Africa did not leave the tournament empty-handed.
Bafana Bafana were named recipients of the Fair Play Award — a small consolation for a team that showed flashes of promise but failed to capitalise in the decisive moments.
As the 2025 COSAFA Cup draws to a close, Angola walk away not just with the trophy, but with a host of accolades that underline their superiority in the region.
And with Depu’s star continuing to rise, the Palancas Negras will take immense confidence into future competitions.
