Father of Stellenbosch star Langelihle Phili rules out AmaZulu return
The father of Stellenbosch forward Langelihle Phili has categorically ruled out any possibility of his son returning to AmaZulu, insisting the Durban-based club must “forget about it”.
Phili, 21, has emerged as one of the standout attacking players in South Africa this season, drawing attention with a series of impressive performances in the Western Cape.
However, despite renewed interest, his father Patrick Phili says there is no route back to his former club.
“They know what they did,” said Patrick Phili. “I told them why I sent my son away. They have to accept it. Phili will never play for AmaZulu again; they’d better forget about it.”
The striker’s form represents a sharp contrast to the circumstances surrounding his departure from AmaZulu at the beginning of the 2023/2024 campaign.
Since then, his development has accelerated following his move within the Stellenbosch setup.
Having initially progressed through the club’s academy, Phili played a key role in a historic season for the reserve side, helping them secure a quadruple that included the DStv Diski Challenge and the Premier League Next Generation Cup.
His performances were rewarded with a professional contract in September 2024.
He made an immediate impact at senior level, scoring on his debut in a 5-0 win over Nsingizini Hotspurs in the CAF Confederation Cup.
That momentum has carried into the current 2025/2026 season, where he has registered eight goals and one assist in 30 appearances across all competitions.
A former pupil of Glenwood High School in Durban, Phili is now being guided towards opportunities beyond South Africa.
“He’s at Stellenbosch, and the next step is to go further,” his father added. “There’s interest, but I don’t want to talk about it too much.
Things move very quickly in football. We expect him to go abroad after Stellenbosch. Last year alone, he had three different trials.”
Phili remains under contract with Stellenbosch until the end of the 2026/2027 season, leaving the club well placed should formal offers arrive, particularly from Europe, in the next transfer window.
