Lamlioui strike sends Morocco past Tanzania into CHAN 2024 semi-finals

Lamlioui strike sends Morocco past Tanzania into CHAN 2024 semi-finals

Oussama Lamlioui’s decisive first-half goal secured Morocco a 1-0 victory over hosts Tanzania, earning the Atlas Lions a place in the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Despite the narrow scoreline, the match in Tanzania was marked by contrasting halves, with the hosts dominating early exchanges before Morocco’s experience and composure ultimately proved decisive.

Tanzania start strong

With home support behind them, the Taifa Stars began the quarter-final brightly, demonstrating confidence in possession and a clear attacking intent. They enjoyed 53% of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, putting Morocco under sustained pressure with their energy and quick passing.

Tanzania also outshot their opponents in the first half, recording six attempts compared to Morocco’s three. However, their lack of precision in front of goal proved costly. While the Taifa Stars were only able to direct two of those efforts on target, Morocco made the most of their opportunities, showcasing efficiency rather than dominance.

Morocco take control

The second half saw a shift in momentum as Morocco tightened their grip on proceedings. With a more disciplined defensive shape and improved ball circulation, the Atlas Lions began to dictate the tempo, limiting Tanzania’s attacking threats while creating openings of their own.

The breakthrough came in the 65th minute through a well-constructed move. Raja Athletic Club midfielder Youssef Belammari split the Tanzanian defence with a precise pass to Lamlioui, who coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. The RS Berkane striker’s clinical finish proved to be the match’s only goal, underlining his composure on the big stage.

Hosts fall short

Despite a spirited response from Tanzania, who pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Morocco’s defence held firm. The Atlas Lions managed the final stages of the match with maturity, frustrating the hosts and protecting their lead.

For Tanzania, the result brought disappointment after a promising campaign as co-hosts of CHAN 2024. Their early dominance and attacking ambition drew praise from supporters, but their inability to convert possession into goals left them vulnerable against a Moroccan side renowned for its discipline and efficiency in knockout competitions.

Atlas Lions advance

Morocco’s victory sees them move one step closer to another CHAN title, continuing their tradition of strong performances in the continental competition. The Atlas Lions, who have become a formidable force at this level, showcased their ability to remain composed under pressure and seize key moments when they arise.

Lamlioui’s match-winning strike is expected to boost his profile, while Belammari’s creative influence in midfield was another highlight for the North African side.

With the semi-finals now looming, Morocco will be eager to build on this disciplined display as they aim for another championship triumph. Tanzania, meanwhile, can take pride in a performance that showed progress and competitiveness on the continental stage despite the heartbreak of a narrow defeat.
