Lamine Yamal has credited former Barcelona coach Xavi for launching his career and those of other young players at the club.
The 17-year-old winger expressed his gratitude following Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Espanyol on May 15, 2025, a result that put the Catalan giants in full control of the La Liga title race.
“I want to thank Xavi. Without him, none of this would have been possible,” Yamal said. “He gave us young players the opportunity to make our debuts.”
Yamal scored one of the two goals, with Fermín López adding the second to seal the win. Now a regular starter under new coach Hansi Flick, Yamal has enjoyed a breakout season with eight goals and 13 assists in 35 appearances.
His sharp dribbling, smart passing, and 90% pass completion rate have drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi, praise the teenager downplays. He’s focused on helping the team finish strong in the title race.
A fan favourite this season, Yamal’s rise is a symbol of Barcelona’s renewed belief in homegrown talent.
