Lamine Yamal targets landmark Clasico as Barcelona seek to close Real Madrid gap

Lamine Yamal will make his first appearance against Real Madrid at Camp Nou in a Clasico carrying particular significance for the Barcelona forward, who is aiming to inspire his side to a major victory and reduce the six-point gap between the two rivals.

The match represents a significant test for the 18-year-old, who has previously spoken of his excitement at facing Real Madrid during an interview with Jorge Valdano. It also gives Yamal an opportunity to strengthen his claim among the leading players in world football, with the winner of the Ballon d’Or due to be announced in London.

Before individual honours can be considered, however, Yamal must help Barcelona overcome a Real Madrid side six points ahead of them. The game will also be his first against manager Jose Mourinho, whose tactical approach is known for attempting to restrict the influence of the opposition’s most dangerous players.

The fixture has added importance for Yamal because he missed Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations last May after suffering a left hamstring injury against Celta Vigo. He followed the celebrations from the stands, cheering Ferran Torres’ goal and reacting with delight to a superb free-kick scored by Marcus Rashford before watching his team-mates lift the trophy.

That was Yamal’s third La Liga title at the age of 18. He had played a significant role in Barcelona’s superiority over Real Madrid during the season, continuing a remarkable collection of honours despite his age.

His medal haul also includes two Copa del Rey titles, two Spanish Super Cups, a European title and a World Cup. His rapid rise has made him one of Barcelona’s most prominent leaders as the club established an advantage over Real Madrid, contrary to the expectations that accompanied Hansi Flick’s arrival at the club.

Yamal has won five of his Clasico appearances, lost four and contributed three goals and two assists. The 2025 Copa del Rey final was one of his most notable matches against Real Madrid, during a sequence in which Barcelona won three of the four meetings between the teams.

There have also been difficult moments. Yamal played only 24 minutes of the 2024 Spanish Super Cup final, while his first goal at Santiago Bernabeu was ruled out after the ball he had struck was not awarded. He responded emphatically in October of the same year, helping Barcelona to a 4-0 victory and scoring an outstanding goal that was followed by racist reactions from sections of the stadium.

Since then, his rivalry with Real Madrid has continued to produce significant moments. Barcelona lost at Santiago Bernabeu a year ago after comments from Yamal about their opponents, in which he said: “They steal, they complain.” The remarks prompted widespread criticism.

Yamal now appears more determined to let his performances provide the response. He did not take part in Barcelona’s media day with the broadcasters, choosing instead to concentrate on preparing for the forthcoming match.

The Clasico offers him another chance to demonstrate that he can lead Barcelona on football’s biggest occasions, while also narrowing Real Madrid’s advantage and improving his prospects in the individual awards race.
