Lamine Yamal’s goal could not disguise a below-par performance as Barcelona were beaten 4-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
The Spain forward had been expected to play a leading role in the European tie after an outstanding start to the season. His dribbling, individual skill and attacking movement had made him one of Barcelona’s most dangerous players, but he was unable to produce his usual influence against Paris Saint-Germain.
French newspaper L’Equipe described Yamal’s display as disappointing, particularly during the first half. The 17-year-old also found it difficult to win his individual battle with France defender Lucas Hernandez, who helped restrict the winger’s threat.
Expectations had been high before kick-off, with Yamal widely viewed as one of the players most likely to shape the match. His performances earlier in the campaign had suggested he could again decide the game with his ability to beat opponents and create openings through his movement and close control.
Instead, those qualities were largely absent against the Paris side. Yamal struggled to find space and was unable to impose himself on the contest, especially in the opening 45 minutes, as Lucas Hernandez contained him in their direct duels.
Goal unable to change the impression
Yamal scored Barcelona’s second goal in the 79th minute, but L’Equipe judged that the strike did not alter the overall assessment of his performance.
The goal came too late to erase the difficulties he had faced throughout the match. Although he was able to get on the scoresheet, he did not deliver the kind of complete performance that had been anticipated before the game.
Attention had been drawn to Yamal from the warm-up onwards. He had scored an impressive goal in Barcelona’s 5-2 win against Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday, strengthening the belief that he was ready to produce another standout display against Paris Saint-Germain.
That expectation was not fulfilled. A night that had appeared likely to provide another opportunity for Yamal to underline his growing importance instead became a demanding test against a Paris Saint-Germain defence capable of limiting his influence.
Barcelona ultimately left the match with a 4-2 defeat, while Yamal’s goal was the one bright moment in a performance that fell short of the level he had shown at the start of the season.
