Lamine Yamal grateful to God after choosing Spain over Morocco

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has no regrets choosing Spain over Morocco at the international level, while expressing gratitude to God.

Yamal, who has Morocco and Equatorial Guinea roots opted to represent the European giants and has since established himself as a key member of the team.

The 18-year-old winger has, however, unveiled the story behind his crucial choice of Spain at the expense of Morocco. Yamal doesn’t hide the fact that the decision was tough, as Morocco is also his homeland.

“Deep down, I did think about playing for Morocco. At that time, Morocco had just reached the World Cup semi-finals. But when it came down to it, I didn’t hesitate for a second. With all my love and respect for Morocco, I’ve always wanted to play in Europe and at the Euros.

“I believe European football is more popular, and in my opinion, it’s closer to the highest international level”

“Thank God, I made that choice. It also brings me closer to the World Cup with a real shot at winning… I will always love Morocco, since it’s also my country. But I grew up in Spain and feel that it’s my country too.” Yamal stated.

Lamine Yamal made his debut for Spain in September 2023 against Georgia, playing 46 minutes and scoring one goal.

In total, Yamal has made 23 appearances for La Roja, netting 6 goals and providing 12 assists. In 2024, Yamal lifted the EURO 2024 trophy with Spain.
