Lamine Yamal discusses racist abuse at Bernabeu

Lamine Yamal has spoken publicly about the racist abuse he experienced during Barcelona’s Clasico against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on October 26, 2024.

The winger discussed the incident with Jorge Valdano during an interview for Universo Valdano.

Asked whether racism had been directed at him, Yamal replied: “Yes, a thousand times.” He explained that discrimination is not always obvious, saying comments, gestures and hostile looks can sometimes be racist even when those responsible fail to recognise their behaviour.

“People are indirectly racist towards you, but maybe they don’t realise it. There are many comments, many looks, many times, that are racist and they don’t realise it,” the Barcelona player said.

Yamal also recalled abuse aimed at him and Raphinha while the pair celebrated a goal. He insisted the insults did not affect his performance or emotions during the match.

“People were surprised by my reaction. In the end, that person calling me ‘black’ isn’t going to bother me at all; I am black, I’m not any colour,” Yamal explained.

LaLiga reported the incident to police. Real Madrid later identified a minor who received a 12-month ban from attending matches and was ordered to complete 30 hours of socio-educational work. The full interview will air on Movistar Plus on Friday at 9 p.m.
