Lamine Camara embodies the future of football – Monaco boss Filipe Luis
AS Monaco head coach Filipe Luis believes Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara has all the qualities to become one of the defining players of the next generation.
Camara, 22, attracted strong interest from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, with the Premier League giants pushing to sign the midfielder. However, the proposed move collapsed in the final stages of the window, allowing Monaco to retain one of their most important players.
Camara has since put the failed transfer behind him and remains focused on his development at Monaco, much to the delight of Luis, who has been hugely impressed by the Senegal international.
The Brazilian coach has repeatedly praised Camara’s extraordinary physical capacity and technical qualities. Following Monaco’s 1-0 victory over Le Havre in August, Luis admitted that he had never encountered a player with such a combination of qualities during his two decades in football.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Luis went even further in his assessment of the midfielder, predicting that Camara’s profile represents where the modern game is heading.
“In twenty years’ time, we may well see plenty of players like him,” Luis said. “He can run a marathon, play for ninety minutes without ever letting up, whilst playing football. He embodies the future of the game.”
Camara developed his footballing foundation at Génération Foot, one of Senegal’s most respected academies. He moved to France through the academy’s partnership with FC Metz before joining Monaco in 2024.
Since arriving on the French Riviera, the Diouloulou-born midfielder has continued to develop rapidly and established himself among the standout midfielders in Ligue 1.
His ability to combine relentless running, technical quality and tactical intelligence has made him a key figure for Monaco, while his performances have also attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
With Chelsea’s interest having already demonstrated his growing reputation, Luís’ comments underline the belief within Monaco that Camara could become an even more influential figure in European football in the years ahead.
