Togolese Midfielder Lalawelé Atakora Joins Helsingborgs on Two-Year Deal
Sweden — Lalawelé Atakora, the Togolese attacking midfielder, has secured a move within the Swedish top flight, signing a two-year contract with Helsingborgs IF. The 24-year-old remains under contract with AIK Stockholm until July 2015 but had been surplus to requirements at the club.
Atakora, once regarded as one of Togo’s brightest footballing prospects, first caught attention after starring at the 2007 African Junior Championship, where Togo finished as runners-up. His early promise earned him a move to AIK following the junior World Cup. Although his career struggled to consistently take off in Stockholm, he impressed at times with notable performances in the Allsvenskan.
In recent seasons, his playing opportunities dwindled, prompting a loan spell at Balıkesirspor in Turkey’s second division. His strong form there rekindled interest from scouts, leading to his latest transfer.
Atakora’s international profile is rising, bolstered by key contributions to the Togolese national team, including a crucial goal against Cameroon during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Lomé.
Prior to signing with Helsingborgs, the midfielder was reportedly in discussions with clubs in Switzerland and Greece, but ultimately chose to continue his career in Sweden.
Helsingborgs fans welcomed the signing on social media, with club representatives expressing optimism about Atakora’s impact.
