Kylian Mbappe training-ground row deepens Real Madrid unrest before El Clasico
Tensions inside Real Madrid have intensified at a delicate stage of the season, with fresh concerns over squad harmony surfacing ahead of a decisive clash with Barcelona.
The spotlight has fallen sharply on Kylian Mbappe, whose recent training-ground altercation has become emblematic of a broader unease within the squad following their UEFA Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.
Multiple incidents involving senior figures have disrupted what was once considered a stable dressing room environment.
Sources indicate that frustrations have simmered since the European elimination, with players and staff navigating a tense atmosphere in the build-up to one of the season’s most defining fixtures.
Mbappe clash with coaching staff raises concerns
The most notable flashpoint involving Mbappe occurred during a training session ahead of Madrid’s trip to face Real Betis on April 24.
The French forward of Cameroonian and Algerian descents reportedly reacted angrily during a drill after being flagged offside by a member of the coaching staff acting as an assistant referee.
According to accounts from within the club, Mbappe addressed the staff member in insulting terms, an outburst that did not sit well with several figures behind the scenes.
While such heated exchanges are not entirely uncommon in elite football environments, the tone and context of this incident have drawn particular scrutiny given Madrid’s current fragility.
There has been no formal disciplinary action taken against Mbappe, but the episode has amplified internal criticism regarding both player conduct and the club’s handling of such situations. Several individuals close to the dressing room have questioned whether stronger leadership should have been exercised.
Earlier Rudiger altercation adds to instability
Mbappe’s clash followed an earlier confrontation involving Antonio Rudiger, who was at the centre of a heated dressing-room argument with a teammate at the club’s Valdebebas training complex. The Germany international is understood to have initiated the exchange before later apologising to the squad.
In an effort to repair relations, Rudiger hosted a gathering for teammates and their families days later, a gesture viewed internally as an attempt to restore unity. However, the sequence of incidents has contributed to a lingering sense of unease rather than resolving underlying tensions.
Injury, absence and external scrutiny
Mbappe’s situation has been further complicated by his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained against Betis. Granted time off by the club’s medical staff, the 27-year-old travelled to Italy with his partner during his rehabilitation period, a decision that sparked debate among supporters and figures within the club.
His return to Madrid coincided with the team’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol, secured by a brace from Vinicius Junior. Yet, rather than easing tensions, Mbappe’s absence during a challenging spell has remained a point of contention.
Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa sought to distance himself from the situation when questioned publicly.“In their free time, each player does what they see fit, and I don’t get involved in that,” the 43-year-old manager said.
“All planning regarding injured players is supervised and managed by Madrid’s medical staff, who are the ones who decide when they need to go to Valdebebas and when they don’t.”
Despite this stance, sources suggest Arbeloa is privately dissatisfied with how the matter has been handled, reflecting a disconnect between internal sentiment and public messaging.
Mbappe response and mounting pressure
Mbappe’s representatives have pushed back against the criticism, insisting the narrative surrounding his behaviour has been exaggerated.
“A portion of the criticism is based on an over-interpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, and does not reflect the reality of Kylian’s commitment and daily work for the team,” they told The Athletic.
Nevertheless, the cumulative effect of recent events has heightened scrutiny on Madrid’s internal dynamics with El Clasico looming over the weekend.
