Kylian Mbappe says working with Zinedine Zidane for France is ‘like something out of a movie’

Kylian Mbappe says Zinedine Zidane becoming France manager has created a remarkable moment in his career, after the former midfielder played a part in his early connection with Real Madrid.

Zidane has replaced Didier Deschamps, who left the role after 14 years in charge. Mbappe remains France captain as the national team begins a new era under its former World Cup-winning leader.

The relationship between Mbappe and Zidane began when the forward was a teenager. Zidane took him to Real Madrid’s training complex when Mbappe was 13 or 14, giving him an early opportunity to see the club’s facilities.

“Years ago, he took me to Real Madrid’s training ground,” Mbappe told AS.

“He was the first to pick me up and take me to Real Madrid, to the training complex. I was 13 or 14; it was ages ago.

“And now he’s my national team coach. It’s like something out of a movie, but he’s top-level.”

Mbappe has previously identified Zidane as a figure who represents French football strongly. Their professional relationship will now enter a new stage as they work together with the national team.

The France captain acknowledged that Zidane’s appointment would require an adjustment after the squad spent more than a decade working under Deschamps. However, he expects the players to adapt quickly to their new manager’s approach.

“It’s a new phase with a new coach,” Mbappe said. “It’s going to be a new experience for everyone, since we’ve only ever had Deschamps.

“It will be a change for us, but I think everything will turn out very well.”

Zidane’s first game in charge will be against Turkey in the Nations League on Friday. France will then face Belgium and Italy.
