Kylian Mbappé returns to Madrid for treatment after France injury

Kylian Mbappé has left the France squad after sustaining a left knee tendon injury during the 1-0 Nations League victory over Türkiye.

The France captain scored the only goal of the match on Friday but was forced off after appearing to overextend his left knee while finishing with his right foot.

The French Football Federation confirmed the injury and said Mbappé will return to Madrid for treatment.

Mbappé forced off after scoring

Mbappé appeared to be in discomfort immediately after scoring his 67th international goal at Kocaeli Stadium.

The Real Madrid forward was able to limp through his goal celebration before attempting to continue playing.

However, he eventually went down in pain and was replaced by Désiré Doué.

France manager Zinedine Zidane later confirmed that Mbappé would not remain with the squad for the rest of the international camp.

“He’s not OK. It does not look good, unfortunately. I think he’ll have to go home. We won’t take risks. He overextended his knee while shooting. It’s not really encouraging for him to carry on.”

France face further Nations League fixtures

Mbappé’s departure means he will miss the remainder of France’s international programme during the current camp.

Les Bleus were due to face Belgium away on Monday before two home fixtures against Italy and Belgium at Stade de France in early October.

Medical examinations are expected to determine the full extent of Mbappé’s injury.

France must now decide whether to call up another player to replace their captain for the remaining fixtures.
