Kylian Mbappé has heaped praise on French international teammate Dayot Upamecano, describing him as “one of the best defenders in the world” amid growing speculation about the Bayern Munich star’s future.

Upamecano, who is of Guinean descent, has a contract with Bayern that runs until the summer of 2026, but talks over an extension have stalled due to reported disagreements over financial terms.

This has sparked interest from several top European clubs, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain said to be monitoring the situation closely.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of France’s clash with Ukraine, Mbappé was full of admiration for the 26-year-old defender’s performances this season.

“He is brimming with confidence and is considered one of the best defenders in the world this season. He’s one of those dominant defenders who are able to apply high pressure,” Mbappé said.

“It’s important to have players like that. He can keep up with strikers and win tackles. He’s a tactical asset. He plays for a big club, FC Bayern Munich. There aren’t many better clubs, but there are better ones,” the Real Madrid forward added with a smile.

When asked about Upamecano’s future, Mbappé refused to be drawn into speculation but hinted that several top clubs would be keen to secure his services.

“Out of respect for his club and him, I will not comment on this, but when it comes to a player of this calibre, every club will try to sign him,” he said.

With Bayern Munich eager to keep hold of their defensive mainstay, the coming months could prove decisive in determining whether Upamecano remains in Germany or considers a new challenge abroad.
