Kylian Mbappe has been barred from posting on Xiaohongshu, one of China’s most popular social media platforms, as the controversy surrounding the Real Madrid forward escalates.
The account linked to Mbappe was suspended on Tuesday for “violating forum guidelines”, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.
The decision further limits the France captain’s presence in the Chinese market, where social media is an important channel for communication with supporters and for commercial partnerships.
The suspension follows widespread criticism of a video showing Mbappe joking about Mao Zedong, the former Chinese leader. The incident has also prompted a response from Chinese authorities, who have formally condemned the player’s behaviour.
Several Chinese brands have already suspended their partnerships with Mbappe. Beyond the impact on his public image, the dispute could also cost the France international valuable sponsorship income in a highly lucrative market.
Mbappe issued an apology on Tuesday, acknowledging that his comments had caused offence in China and among Chinese communities around the world.
“During a recent interview, I commented on a picture of myself, but my comment was inappropriate, and I now realise that it hurt the feelings of many people in China and Chinese communities around the world,” he said.
“I apologise to everyone who was upset by my words. That was never my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I express my sincere regret.”
