Kylian Mbappe hopes to dedicate Ballon d’Or to African supporters

Kylian Mbappe says he hopes to dedicate the Ballon d’Or to his African supporters if he wins the prestigious individual award.

The Real Madrid forward, who has Cameroonian and Algerian heritage, spoke about his strong connection with the African continent and said he has remained closely attached to his roots throughout his career.

Mbappe, 27, recently returned to Cameroon, where he spent time as a child, and said the experience reinforced his connection with the country and the wider African community.

“I’ve always had an upbringing steeped in African culture. I have never cut ties with my roots or my origins,” Mbappe said.

“I went back to Cameroon not long ago, where I used to go as a child, and I had an amazing time.

“Every time I go to Africa, I’m welcomed so warmly. I feel the love from the people.”

Mbappe has long enjoyed significant popularity across Africa, with his family background helping to create a strong connection with supporters on the continent.

His father, Wilfried Mbappe, was born in Cameroon, while his mother, Fayza Lamari, has Algerian heritage.

The forward was also asked about the support he receives from African voters in the Ballon d’Or process, with representatives from African countries among those who take part in the voting.

Mbappe expressed his gratitude for their backing and said his African heritage makes the recognition particularly meaningful to him.

“I thank them for their support over all these years. I’ve always felt so loved whenever I’ve set foot on the African continent,” he said.

“Having African origins, it’s always a pleasure when people associate me with the Ballon d’Or.

“I hope to leave with the Ballon d’Or and, in one way or another, dedicate it to them.”

Mbappe has established himself among the leading contenders for the award during his career, having won numerous domestic and international honours and consistently produced high scoring numbers for both club and country.

The Ballon d’Or is awarded annually to the player judged to have had the strongest individual year, with journalists from around the world taking part in the voting process.
