Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, sweeping aside Monaco with a convincing 6-1 victory on matchday seven of the UEFA Champions League.
Kylian Mbappé set the tone early, scoring twice before halftime in the fifth and 26th minutes to put the hosts firmly in control. With those goals, the French forward equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 11 goals in a single Champions League group stage, a feat the Portuguese legend achieved during the 2015/16 season.
The dominance continued after the break as Franco Mastantuono added a third goal in the 51st minute, before Monaco’s Thilo Kehrer turned the ball into his own net four minutes later.
Vinícius Júnior extended the lead on 63 minutes, and Jude Bellingham completed the scoring for Los Blancos with a strike in the 80th minute. Jordan Teze managed a late consolation for Monaco in the 72nd minute, but it did little to alter the course of the match.
The emphatic win strengthens Real Madrid’s position in the standings and underlines the growing influence of coach Álvaro Arbeloa’s side on the European stage.
Mbappé’s standout display against his former club, in particular, served as a powerful statement on a night that firmly belonged to the Spanish giants.
The Frenchman has been the key man for Los Blancos this season, with his goals earning a lot of points for the UEFA Champions League record champions.
